On June 24, 1777, Chamis, a 20-year-old Ohlone man, became the first adult Native American baptized at Mission Dolores in San Francisco. Given the Christian name Francisco Moraga, his baptism marked a turning point in the Spanish mission's early efforts to convert the indigenous Ohlone population.
