1901: John Brickwedel hired as ranger to protect Sutro Forest from trespassers.

On June 10, 1901, John Brickwedel was hired as ranger of Sutro Forest, Adolph Sutro's vast woodland estate west of Twin Peaks in San Francisco. Tasked with deterring trespassers from the densely forested acreage, Brickwedel became a fixture of the remote property, known well enough to local children like young Harold Wollenberg that they would tease him during his patrols. His hiring marked Sutro's commitment to securing and managing the thousands of acres he had amassed for his vision of a private forest preserve.
